Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia: Joe Pesci may have received top billing in the comedy My Cousin Vinny (1992), but it was Tomei who stole the film as his wisecracking, Brooklynese girlfriend Mona Lisa Vito and received a Supporting Actress Oscar in the process. A veteran of theatrical productions on both coasts, Tomei made her film debut with a bit part in The Flamingo Kid (1984), and had her first notable role on TV, as Lisa Bonet's roommate in the first season of "A Different World" (1987-88). She showed comic flair as Sylvester Stallone's daughter in Oscar (1991) and since My Cousin Vinny has appeared in Richard Attenborough's Chaplin (1992, in an underwritten part as silent-screen comedienne Mabel Normand). She won raves for her passionate performance as a waitress head over heels in love with Christian Slater in Untamed Heart (1993). Recent credits include Equinox (also 1993), The Paper, Only You (both 1994), and The Perez Family (1995).
